The Faces Behind the Phone: My Experience at Volunteer Prayer Partner Appreciation Day

By: Rhiannon Morrison

What started with setting up the Anyone Pray table, I later left with a full heart — and a far deeper understanding of why Anyone Pray exists.

The other day, I had the privilege of attending Crossroads’ Prayer Volunteer Appreciation Day — a gathering to honour the men and women who show up, call after call, to pray with strangers in their most vulnerable moments. What I didn’t anticipate was how profoundly their stories would move me.

The room was a mosaic. Different ages, different nationalities, different mother tongues, different life experiences. Some had been walking with Christ for decades, like a 90 year old woman I spoke to. Others had found Him through roads that most people would never travel. And yet every single one of them had arrived at the same place — a quiet conviction that prayer changes things, and a willingness to be the voice on the other end of the line when someone needs it most.

“Every person in that room had a story of how they came to Christ. And every single one of them just wanted to share what they had found with anyone who needed it.”

I was fortunate enough to speak with a few of them. I want to share some of their stories — because they are exactly the kind of stories Anyone Pray was built to carry forward.

50 YEARS OF FAITH A man who came to Canada from Sri Lanka found Christ five decades ago — and with Him, freedom from an alcohol and smoking addiction that had defined his youth. Today, he picks up the prayer line and gives others what was once given to him: hope, presence, and prayer.A NEW PATH, A NEW CALLING A woman who spent years of her life following the Quran encountered Jesus — and everything changed. Now, through her local church’s Anyone Pray line, she prays with others who are searching. Her journey has given her a compassion that is impossible to manufacture.

These are not exceptional cases. They were simply two faces in a room full of them. A room full of ordinary people carrying extraordinary stories and choosing, freely, to share the grace they had received.

That is the engine underneath the Anyone Pray platform. Not technology. Not call routing. Not analytics dashboards. It is people like these, from every walk of life, every corner of the world, who have been changed by the gospel and cannot help but offer it to others.

One Call. One Voice. A Life Changed Forever.

This is so powerful to understand the need behind a prayer line. A volunteer who answers that call at 2 am may be the reason someone makes it through the night.

“One conversation. One prayer. One person who answered — that is the difference between a life lost and a life found.”

We don’t always know what is on the other end of a call. It might be someone in the grip of addiction who has finally reached a breaking point and doesn’t know where else to turn. It might be a person sitting in the dark who has run out of reasons to stay and decides in that moment to dial a number instead. It might be a grieving parent, a frightened teenager, someone whose world has just collapsed around them — and who needs, more than anything, to hear another human voice say: “I’m here. You matter. Let’s pray.”

The volunteer who picks up that call is not just offering a service. They are offering themselves. Their time. Their heart. Their story. And in the most sacred moments, they are quite literally offering someone a reason to keep going.

That is not a small thing. That is everything.

“The ripple effect of a single prayer call cannot be measured. The person who finds hope today may go home and be a different parent, a different spouse, a different friend. The life that is changed may one day change another. One call can set a chain of grace in motion that extends further than any of us will ever see.”

These volunteers carry that weight with extraordinary grace and humility. They don’t see themselves as heroes. They see themselves as willing. And that willingness — week after week, call after call, for people they will never meet and stories they may never hear the end of — is one of the most faithful expressions of love I have ever witnessed.

Without These People, None of This Exists

Anyone Pray is built on technology, training, infrastructure, and systems. But strip all of that away and what remains is a person — a real, faithful, transformed person — choosing to show up for a stranger. The prayer line is a number on a piece of paper until a human being answers it. The platform is infrastructure until a voice fills it with warmth and faith and genuine care.

“Without these volunteers, there is no Anyone Pray. They are not a support layer for the ministry. They are the ministry itself.”

Every call answered. Every prayer spoken. Every moment of connection across a phone line in the middle of the night — it happens because a real person decided to give their time to this. Decided that the strangers who call are worth showing up for. Decided, in the quiet and unglamorous rhythm of faithful service, that this is how they will use their life.

To Every Volunteer: A Profound Thank You

To every Prayer Partner volunteer — whether you have taken one call or five thousand, whether you’ve served for a week or for years — please know this:

What you are doing matters in ways that will never be fully counted on this side of eternity.

You give your time not for recognition, not for reward, but because you genuinely believe that prayer moves things. And you were right.

The calls you have answered are the heartbeat of this program. The lives you have touched are its legacy. The prayers you have spoken over strangers are seeds that God alone will water and bring to harvest.

Your commitment to this work is not ordinary. It is extraordinary. And we are honoured beyond words to do this alongside you.

Thank you.

Could You Be the Voice on the Other End?

As I left the Volunteer Prayer Partner Appreciation Day, I found myself thinking about all the stories I had heard. The man whose life was transformed 50 years ago. The woman who found Jesus and now helps others find hope. The countless volunteers who quietly answer calls from people they’ll never meet.

But for each one of those Volunteer Prayer Partners, it all started with a simple decision.

They filled out an application.

They said yes.

They chose to make themselves available for whatever God might do through a phone call.

And I found myself wondering:

Is there anything stopping me from making that kind of eternal, life-saving difference in someone’s life?

Because somewhere tonight, someone will reach for a phone looking for hope. Someone will need prayer. Someone will need to hear a voice that says, “I’m here. You matter. Let’s pray.”

The only question is: who will answer?

If you’ve ever felt called to encourage others, pray with people in their moments of need, and be part of a ministry that is changing lives one conversation at a time, we invite you to consider becoming a Volunteer Prayer Partner.

Your story.

Your faith.

Your willingness to answer.

It could be the reason someone finds hope tomorrow.
