Wet'suwet'en Territory with Wanda Nikal / FIRST PEOPLES VOICES
"This story was filmed in Witset First Nation, which is part of the the Wet’suwet’en Territory. Their ancestors have lived in the regions for over 6,000 years. Their territory encompasses 22,000sq km of land.
The Wet’suwet’en people are divided into 5 clans. They have Hereditary Chiefs as well as Elected Chiefs. H. Chiefs govern the land, E. Chiefs govern the people.
**Elders are the knowledge keepers. Due to covid, no elders were available for recording this story about the land so Wanda stepped in!
Water is life for the Wet’suwet’en people because it provides their major food source – salmon. Without water, their culture ceases to exist.
Catholicism was pushed on their people by Father Morice. Although he had their language transcribed, he was not a very nice man.
The people want to be proud of their language and culture. By telling this story, we are RESTORING HONOUR and DIGNITY to them as a people group.
"The land is us. The water is us.
This is where we get our life from.
I want my grandchildren to enjoy what I enjoyed on the land - clean water, berries, medicines, abundance of food and animals."
- Chief Hagwilnegh (Ron Mitchell)
