Hope Amongst the Rubble

We extend our appreciation for everyone who continues to support our efforts in Haiti.  We are pleased to report that lives continue to be touched and changed even two years after the earthquake.  Bio-sand filters are being distributed to those who still need access to clean water.  We have also been supporting an agricultural program that is training marginalized familes in adult literacy, food security, crop management and cultivation methods to help alleviate the difficulties many face. Hope is still rising amongst the rubble.

Thank you for your continued support through the Crossroads Haiti Earthquake Fund

January 2011

January 12th, 2010 marked a day in history that many will never forget. An earthquake measuring 7.0 hit the country of Haiti, causing massive damage to its capital city of Port-au-Prince, and affecting more than 3 million people. It is estimated that between 250,000 – 300,000 lives were lost in minutes, as the country was unequipped to handle devastation of this magnitude.  Read More...

DEVASTATING EARTHQUAKE

On January 12, 2010, an earthquake devastated Haiti's capital - Port au Prince.  While relief teams are moving into the region to assess the extent of the damage, it is projected that fatalities will be in the tens of thousands.

Roads and hospitals have been destroyed, making the first days of a relief response challenging.  However, Crossroads is in touch with partners on the ground that will provide updates on the immediate needs of the people.  As we coordinate with our partners to mobilize a response, we are appealing to the Canadian public to support us - enabling us to help Haiti.

Crossroads extended relief assistance to Haiti in 2004, after Tropical Jean caused killer floods.  We assisted in rebuilding homes, and churches, providing water filters and emergency medicines.  Containers have been shipped with clothing, food and medical supplies.  Non-relief interventions include a livelihood project.

Approximately 85% of Haitians live in poverty.  A catastrophic event like this leaves the people with no means to meet the emergency health care, shelter, and water and sanitation needs that follow a natural disaster.  If these needs are not met quickly, disease will spread rapidly, multiplying the impact of the devastation.

We are pleased to report that your generosity helped provide emergency medical packs and bio-sand water filters during the initial response.  Since that time we are continuing to support relief efforts through the construction of temporary shelters along with the re-construction of a school and repairs on a church.

Please remember to pray for Haiti.  Reports have stated that the "church" is growing and people have a re-newed faith in God.
